What is an air suspension system?
Honggu Air suspension systems essentially replace a vehicle's coil
springs with air springs. By adding in an on-board air compressor,
sensors and electronic controls, today's air suspension systems
provide several advantages over all-metal, conventional springs,
including near-instant tuning, and the ability to adapt handling to
different situations and vary load capability.
What are air springs made out of?
The air springs are simply tough rubber and plastic bags inflated
to a certain pressure and height to mimic the coil springs.
Is air suspension good for daily driving?
Whether the system is manual or electronic, or installed by a
weekend mechanic or a seasoned tech, air suspension can lower a car
to improve its street cred, even out a heavy payload, or simply
improve the ride of a vintage Detroit metal street monster.
Air Compressor
Air compressors for cars connect to a power source (usually your
car’s 12-volt DC outlet) and force pressurized air into the tire
via the valve. Simple to use and relatively compact, these devices
are essential in any season — especially if you want to get
triple-A off your speed dial.
Air Compressor Work
The air system works by pumping compressed air into air bags or
springs made of textile-reinforced rubber via compressed air lines.
The air compressor is an electric or engine-driven pump that’s
usually attached to the car frame and found under the hood. It
draws in outside air, compresses it, and uses the compressed air to
fill the air springs to “lift” the vehicle’s chassis from the axle.
Aside from being the main part of an air system, air compressors
are also coupled with air tanks in some vehicles. This allows the
driver to inflate tires when driving off-road, for example. Air
compressors can also be used to re-seat a tire that has slipped off
of its rim. Air compressors also have a number of other
pneumatic-type applications like maintaining the PSI for air horns,
etc.
Air spring
Air springs have been used in heavy duty vehicle suspension systems
for nearly a century, where they have been able to provide
usefulness by taking advantage of the compressed air required for
vehicle braking systems. Air springs have provided a two-fold
advantage over mechanical leaf- or coil-springs. One advantage with
air suspension is the extra comfort provided by being able to vary
the air pressure inside the spring, which changes the spring rate,
and therefore, ride quality. Additionally, because variable control
over air pressure adjusts the deck or trailer height, aligning
loading docks to the level of the deck is possible when dock plates
are unavailable.
Air Springs Information
Air springs contain a column of air in an elastomeric bellow or
sleeve to provide suspension, isolation, or actuation. Commonly
found in vehicle suspension systems, occasionally in conjunction
with a coil spring, they are also used to insulate vibration in
machinery and as linear or angular actuators.
